Ranked among the five best Slovak films of all time, Juraj Jakubisko's long-repressed masterpiece is a delirious and radical work of the Czechoslovak New Wave. Shot in the immediate aftermath of the 1968 Soviet invasion, the film follows a tragic love triangle between two men, Yorick and Andrzej, and a Jewish orphan girl, Marta, as they navigate a war-torn landscape of bombed-out churches and wrecked homes. To survive a world defined by political violence and cruelty, they adopt a childlike philosophy of "foolishness," seeking refuge in a joyful yet nightmarish denial of reality.

 

Often compared to the "Slovak Fellini," Jakubisko creates a mad universe filled with dazzling, hallucinatory images and a disorienting sound design. Part playful homage to Truffaut's "Jules et Jim" and part anarchic protest, the film was condemned as "decadent and harmful art" and remained locked in vaults until the Velvet Revolution of 1989. A free-wheeling, surrealist tour de force, "Birds, Orphans and Fools" remains one of the most significant and visually extravagant creative achievements of Central European cinema.
